Hungarian governing parties support the extension of the state of emergency
Parliament’s defence and law enforcement committee on Monday approved the government’s decision to extend the state of emergency in view of the migration crisis in Hungary.
The committee also supported that the assembly should discuss the protocol on the NATO accession of Sweden and Finland.
Bence Rétvári, state secretary at the interior ministry, told the committee that in 2022 over 270,000 illegal entry attempts had been recorded, far more than in previous years. He also warned that some 3.5 million refugees currently in Turkey were “potential migrants”. He insisted that migrants were increasingly aggressive, adding that last year 477 attacks against border authorities were reported from the Hungary-Serbia border, with shots fired in 104 cases.
The government announced last Tuesday that it would extend the state of emergency until September 7.
Rétvári also slammed the European Union for its “failed” policy of sending migrants back to their homelands, and said a mere 7-15 percent of illegal migrants were sent back to their country of origin. The European Union should contribute to the costs of border protection in Hungary, which amount to 650 billion forints (EUR 1.7bn), he added.
Előd Novák, MP of the opposition Mi Hazánk party, suggested that border guards should be allowed to use their guns “not only out of self defence but also to deter” migrants. Rétvári responded that the government would not change the current rules of weapon use.

Europe should be on its hands and knees thanking Hungary for standing virtually alone in protecting its borders. Instead, the E.U. keeps victimizing Hungary. It’s clear why: The E.U. is not a helpless victim of Illegal immigration but positively encourages it through deliberate inaction and subsequent bountiful rewards to those who successfully get in (which is almost all of them, through borders other than Hungary’s). The only question left to answer is WHY that is so. “Answers on a postcard,” as they say!
Uh. Michael. Numerous people labeled “illegal immigrants” are actually refugees or potential asylum seekers … And there is a difference – https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/refugees-asylum-seekers-and-migrants/. Imagine packing everything you need for the rest of your life in a Wizzair size carry on bag and leaving your home, possibly forever. Not something you do for the hell of it. Just try one morning when you’re bored. It’s a sobering experience.
Secondly – it’s not Hungary we’re protecting. Almost all of the folks crossing the border are passing through. Just like the Ukrainian refugees, they don’t stay here (fully 8 million Ukrainians fled their country, many through Hungary, less than 40’000 ended up staying https://www.statista.com/statistics/1312584/ukrainian-refugees-by-country/). I wonder why?
State of Emergency my eye!
It’s Rule by Decree, (“Rule by decree is a style of governance allowing quick, unchallenged promulgation of law BY a SINGLE PERSON or group of people, usually without legislative approval.” – Wkipedia).
Rule by Decree is often a key feature of DICTATORSHIPS.
I can already see this continuation of State of Emergecies well into the next general elections.
Yes, it’s Rule by Decree. This is a dictatorship. Anyone who thinks otherwise is blind.
